Sort Belongings by Destination
- Keep: measure large furniture before reserving space for it. Consider doorways, stairs, elevators and storage.
- Gift: agree with family members on collection dates rather than moving everything into storage.
- Donate or sell: arrange pickup or selling help early and confirm what each provider accepts.
- Dispose: identify specialist handling for paint, electronics, documents or other items needing separate arrangements.
Keep essential documents, medication, valuables and your first-night supplies under your own control throughout the move.
Compare the Complete Financial Change
A smaller home can still have a higher HOA fee, a different tax bill or substantial moving and renovation expenses. Compare estimated sale proceeds, purchase costs, financing, taxes, insurance, association responsibilities and future maintenance together.
Review seller closing costs and net proceeds and buying and selling at the same time. Obtain a property-specific estimate before assuming how much equity will be available.
